This week, students continued their work in computer science and performed a chemical engineering lab. During the computer science portion of this week’s section, students learned about arrays and created some basic programs, including code that printed out “Hello World!” onto the computer screen. For the second part of this week’s lesson, students performed two experiments in the chemical engineering labs at Penn. The first experiment involved using high-resolution cameras to determine how water beaded up on different surfaces and thus determine how hydrophobic or hydrophilic different materials were. The second part of the lab used hydrophobic filters to separate water and oil. These labs were accompanied with a talk about the applications of these experiments, such as separating oil spills, and a tour of one of the chemical engineering labs at Penn.
